City Of Oaks

Raleigh is known as the "City of Oaks" for its many oak trees, though pine trees are the dominant species. It has a population of approximately 367,995 (2007 estimate), making it the second most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte. Raleigh is the capital of the State of North Carolina. It is also the 51st-largest city in the United States. The 3 cities that make up the Triangle are Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh. The name "the triangle" was created in 1959 after the research park, Research Triangle Park. The city Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh.
